Beginning the Journey: New Developments in the AASA Aspiring Superintendents Academy

AASA has had a very successful Aspiring Superintendents Academy for many years.  With Dr. Dave Schuler as lead Superintendent, this academy helps to prepare leaders for their future career pathways by teaching content based on national standards as well as exploring problems of practice that they may encounter in their leadership journeys.  A few years ago, the AASA Leadership Network added an Aspiring Superintendent Academy using a blended model, providing some sessions face-to-face and some in a virtual format.

In October, we launched the inaugural Aspiring Superintendent Academy for Female Leaders.  An all-star faculty of five dynamic district superintendents in the San Diego area, led by Dr. Candace Singh, began the new AASA Academy with 35 district leaders who are interested in preparing for the role of Superintendent through the unique lens of female leaders.

We know that fewer than 25% of superintendents in the country are female.  We at AASA have an opportunity—even a compelling responsibility—to focus energy on preparing more women and minorities for top leadership roles.  We salute superintendents who “pay it forward” every day by encouraging, mentoring, and supporting talented educators who aspire to district leadership roles.  Continuing to excel as public school systems depends upon our nurturing the next generation of leaders.
