AASA School District Leaders:

It has been with great privilege  to work in partnership with AASA, The School Superintendents Association this past school year. The association, under the leadership of Dr. Dan Domenech, successfully launched the safety hotline and monthly messaging of safety best practice. In addition, thanks to more than 30 school leaders who have been and continue to be willing to share their expertise, a protocol was established to assist  members in need of assistance if they find their districts are in a safety crisis situation. The safety hotline will continue to be in place for the new school year.

During the 2018-19 school year, I traveled to more than 20 different states sharing information on best practice and learning from membership about what has been successful in their districts to enhance safety.

As the new school year will shortly be upon all of us, the AASA leadership team looks to build on the next level of safety work that would benefit membership.

I am absolutely certain that the next level of work should come from members sharing a component of their present safety plan. To further define, a monthly message to all from a district that has evidence-based information on how they have upgraded their plan for the new school year. During my travels, I witnessed extraordinary leaders simply doing what was right for children regarding safety:

  • Successfully closing a high school campus to enhance safety.
  • Community partners to provide an optimal social emotional learning program.
  • Reconstituting existing staff to enhance security leadership.
  • Partnering with local public safety officials to ensure consistency in practice.
  • Empowering the student voice in safety planning.

The design of the 2019-2020 school year will have a monthly feature of safety best practice beginning in August.

I look forward to a large number of leaders contacting me to share their work for national exposure.

Together, we will make a difference……..one student at a time.
