Rhode Island: Leaders Matter

Nominated By: Thomas DiPaola, Executive Director, Rhode Island School Superintendents Association

Rosemarie Kraeger, Superintendent, Middletown Public Schools, Middletown, R.I.

https://www.mpsri.net/page.cfm?p=1

Rosemarie Kraeger (https://www.mpsri.net/page.cfm?p=1265) has had a long and distinguished career as an educator and superintendent of schools. She is truly an example of someone who lives to serve the children and families in her community.

Middletown serves a significant number of military families and as a result, the families are often moving in and out of schools.

Superintendent Kraeger consistently has created a climate where all are welcome and the diversity of the (including military) families’ experiences are celebrated and not seen as a “problem” to be fixed.

She is a leader who set a vision and created an atmosphere where everyone participates in setting goals and objectives to progress toward the vision of what is possible. Moreover, she enables members of the community to “own” their part as well as being a part of the larger community actions toward achievement of the goals and objectives.

Additionally, she exemplifies the blend of providing a “personal touch” in her work while being knowledgeable and technically sound.  She has been and continues to be a vocal advocate for children and families in her community.

Exemplars of Leadership:

  • Proven central focus on children and families.
  • Committed to addressing the challenged by military families.
  • Focused on solution rather than problems.

Barry Ricci, Superintendent, Chariho Regional Schools, Wood River Junction, R.I.

Barry Ricci (https://www.chariho.k12.ri.us/adminteam) is one of the most passionate advocates for public education. He is relentless in his belief that education matters and that education is the difference maker for every child. His district is home to a career and technical education center (CTC). He has been very much ahead of the curve in making CTE relevant in preparing students for the careers of the future. His district has consistently been recognized and highly regarded in their work in CTE.

Exemplars of Leadership:

  • Committed to the development of every child.
  • Instituted strong program of career and technical education.
