Building Community Support: A Roadmap for School Administrators

Addressing Youth E-Cigarette Use and Vaping in Schools

AASA, The School Superintendents Association, supports The American Heart Association (AHA) in its fight against youth e-cigarette use and vaping. AHA has created a toolkit/roadmap to help superintendents and school administrators address this epidemic within their communities. The roadmap includes valuable current resources being used across the country.

This brief toolkit is designed to support your school(s) in holding a solution-focused dialogue with parents and communities. Ensuring that parents and community leaders understand what you and your students are dealing with will provide POWERFUL examples of how this epidemic is disrupting our schools, addicting children and damaging the lives of the young people who have been duped into using these dangerous and deadly products. Additionally, you will find a link to a short video of a national superintendent forum on e-cigarettes and vaping held during this year’s AHA annual conference.

AHA is working aggressively at local, state and federal levels to pass policies that protect youth by banning the sale of all flavored tobacco/e-cigarette products that appeal to kids and raising the age to purchase these products to 21. The call to action is clear; we must engage, educate, and empower our school community to stop this epidemic and regain the decades of progress we have made against teen smoking and nicotine use.

Vaping industry faces a triple threat – science, advocacy and community action

American Heart Association announces sweeping research investment, policy advocacy fund and youth activation campaign demanding “Big Vape” to #QuitLying.

“The launch of this game-changing research initiative marks a sentinel moment in the fight to prevent youth vaping and protect our children from nicotine addiction,” said Robert Harrington, M.D., FAHA, president of the American Heart Association. “This research project, one of the largest ever funded by the Association, will help us answer critical questions about the health consequences of vaping and nicotine addiction, particularly in youth.”
